Advent, the four Sundays leading up to Christmas, is a season of waiting. Anticipation. But more than daily chocolates, it’s an annual reminder to be attentive to what is yet to become. Some years it’s an anticipation more reminiscent of childhood Christmas excitement. Other years the waiting is bone deep and desperate. This year is a not-so-joyful waiting. Each day of Advent we get closer to Christmas but also to the presidential inauguration. I’d like to hold that off as long as possible. This year waiting for what is yet to become is tinged with dread. Which I think makes the waiting that much more important.
We need to remind each other that we’ve been here before (quite literally) and we’re not alone. It’s a season for community and gathering with our people. We need this waiting to be a rest, a calm before the storm in which we practice liberation and healing, justice, repair, mercy, and abundant love. It’s a season to remind each other to see, and seek, joy.
To be amazed by, and with, wonder.
